The first victims of my fledgling artistic talent were New Zealand and Germany, where I passed my youth as a gardener; thankfully both are resourceful countries and did not let my experimentation with modernism spoil their beauty.  Then I drove cars from Munich to Tehran for a working holiday.  After studying accountancy and bookkeeping, I joined the Civil Service and worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.  After that, I transferred to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), and worked at the British High Commission in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the British Embassy in Paris and the British Embassy in Kuwait.

After doing a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults, I resigned from the Foreign Service and spent an enjoyable year teaching English in China.  Afterwards I came back to the UK to study Linguistics and continue to teach English.
